People around the world celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th, a holiday initially proposed by socialist feminists to honor women workers everywhere at the 1910 general meeting of the Second International in Copenhagen. March 8 commemorates the New York City Bread and Roses protest march in 1857, where women workers called for shorter working hours, higher wages, and equal rights. Although the holiday was celebrated throughout the world in the 20th century, it was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975. International Women's Day has spawned an amazing art movement, and today I want to share some of my favorite Women's Day posters from around the world: Adjowah Keilman is the owner of The Weekend Store, an Etsy shop that makes art and accessories for writers, travelers, and other interesting people.
