I love sweets. Swedish Fish are my all time favorite, but really, give me anything with sugar and I'll be happy. So, you can imagine my delight when I saw that SF Etsy & The Commons' Block Party this Sunday will have so many great sweets makers.
Woop Woop Fine Foods was started by husband and wife team Johnnie and Lexi Lightning in Queensland, Australia. They began their bakery business, then called Slow Rise, in 2002, where they sold breads, cookies, and granola at local farmers markets on the Sunshine Coast.
The Lightnings returned to the Bay Area and in April 2014 launched their new company called Woop Woop Fine Foods. The name is an homage to an Australian expression meaning “the boondocks” or “the sticks” which describes the small community where they lived. And what's cool - in America, Woop Woop translates as an expression of approval, joy and excitement (Tag Team, anyone?). Johnnie and Lexi now create a line of gluten-free cookies and granola with unusual flavor combinations and locally sourced organic ingredients. I've tried Woop Woop's Crispy Salted Oatmeal Cookies before, and they were scrumptious. I can't wait to see what other delectable delights they bring with them Sunday!
Even though I love sweets, I'm not a big fan of chocolate. Crazy, I know. I'm like the only person on the planet who willingly chooses an oatmeal raisin cookie over a chocolate chip one. I can't help it - the heart wants what the heart wants. So, I am especially curious to try Jeri Vasquez's 'dangerously delicious' handmade caramels. Her company, Kindred Cooks, takes the best family soft caramel recipes to produce their delicious caramel treats. In addition to the traditional caramel flavor, you can find combinations like Vanilla Chai, Mango/Passionfruit, Lavender/Meyer Lemon & Toasted Coconut caramels, to name a few. And if you can't choose just one, Jeri offers sampler packages so you can get all of your favorites together. I love life without limitations!
There's a persistent rumor that the food in England is gross. Like, bland and uncreative, which may be true for some British foods - but one thing they really do right is jam. One of the best things I've ever eaten in my life was in London - it was at the cafe in the Albert & Victoria Museum, a proper soft and flaky English scone with clotted cream and jam. I don't even know what kind of jam it was, all I know is that it was sweet and fruity and just the best I'd ever had. I've spent so much money on imported clotted cream & Sconehenge scones & fancy preserves at Berkeley Bowl trying to recapture that experience but really the bread and butter is secondary; it all comes down to the jam. I think I've found what I've been looking for in San Jose's own Woo Garden jams. Not only do they create clever and inventive flavor profiles like Pear/Lavender, Blackberry/Creme de Violette & Apricot/Cantaloupe, but the names are so lovely - Dusk, Wink, Vacay, Dreamy, Lust. I wonder if they'd mind if I brought my own scones and tried them all?
At first glance, Trina Moreau's jewelry line, Decadent Minis, is cute. So impossibly cute!! You'll find yourself oohing and aahing over her 1:12 scale miniatures of all different kinds of foods, from peanut butter sandwich earrings to popcorn necklaces - they look so realistic, you'll just be completely amazed. And then you realize - they're scented! Each miniature food replica is custom scented to smell just like the real thing! You have to experience it to believe it. And although Trina's jewelry is not edible, they look & smell good enough to eat.
